About DVD-R

The DVD you rent or buy of Hollywood movies is done with a process known as
DVD Video. All players can play this type of DVD. However, the cost of
producing a single DVD of this type runs into thousands of dollars. The large
  studios are able to spread this cost out due to the mass production of their runs.

There is an affordable alternative for your Personal Video that is known as DVD-R.
 It is not compatible with some  older  DVD players. The ability to playback DVD-R was an
     option that was left up to the individual manufacturers to implement if they chose to do so.

Most players manufactured after April 2000 will playback DVD-R without problems.
  Ultimately all DVD players that are sold will be able to play DVD-R as it has
  become the industry standard for home use. 

All other advantages of DVDs, such as picture and sound quality, durability, instant access
   to specific points in the program and easier storage is the same in both formats.
